Praise for The Wit and Wisdom of the Modern Ferrets:

The Wit and Wisdom... is, in my opinion, one of the MOST insightful books on ferret care. Not only do you get the basics on how to, but you benefit by understanding the creative thinking energy of the ferret — you can anticipate actions in day-to-day living. I recommend that folks new to ferret owning or those considering ferret ownership read this book first! I would have loved to have this resource when I first became owned by a ferret."
-- Alicia Drakiotes, Ferret Wise Rescue & Rehabilitation Shelter, NH

The Wit and Wisdom of the Modern Ferrets is a wonderful collection of interesting facts as seen through the eyes of ferrets. Extremely informative and delightfully funny at the same time. A must-add to your collection. Great going, Mary and Eric! Keep up the good work!

About the editor, Mary R. Shefferman:

Mary and Balthazar
Mary and Balthazar

Mary R. Drews Shefferman lives in New York with her husband, Eric, and their two ferrets, Trixie and Gabby. When The Wit and Wisdom was written, they had nine ferrets: Sabrina, Marshmallow, Knuks, Trixie, Bosco da Gama, Balthazar, Cauliflower, Koosh, and Gabrielle. Together Eric and Mary publish Modern Ferret Magazine from their home.

Mary has a BA in English/Writing from Southampton College, Long Island University. She won the Readers and Writers of Southampton College Award for poetry in 1984 and 1985 and the John Steinbeck Award for poetry in 1984.

Before starting Modern Ferret Magazine in 1994, Mary was a managing editor and medical writer for Global Medical Communications in New York City.

Mary makes regular television appearances to promote proper ferret care on the Fox News Channel Pet News, MSG Metro Pets, and The Family Pet.

Mary is also the author of The Ferret: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet, published by Howell Book House in 1996, and 500 Things My Ferret Told Me, published by Modern Ferret.

About the Modern Ferrets:

Sabrina Sabrina
Column: Sabrina Says

Sabrina was Mary and Eric's first ferret. It was her wonderful nature that encouraged Mary and Eric to get more ferrets - which eventually inspired them to create Modern Ferret Magazine. Sabrina wrote her columns about the basic aspects of ferret care.

Marshmallow
Column: Marshmallow Explains It All

Although he wasn't the brightest ferret in the world in real life, when Marshmallow donned his "smartee" glasses, he became a witty columnist reporting on the finer aspects of ferret thought and culture.

Knuks
Column: Knuks Makes Mischief

Weighing in at under a pound, Knuks definitely packed a lot of mischief into her tiny body. Being an itty-bitty, dark-eyed white, she looked a lot like one of the characters from Mad Magazine's Spy Vs. Spy. Knuks liked to tell other ferrets how to cause mischief. Mary and Eric often included a follow-up on how to prevent such mischief.

Trixie
Column: Trixie's Tips

Trixie liked to keep things short and to the point. A very pale cinnamon girl, she liked to stick her nose into everything (just for a moment!). Her quick and easy tips are sometimes just the thing you need.

Gabrielle
Column: Dear Gabby

Although Gabrielle was the youngest of the Modern Ferrets, when she wrote her Dear Gabby column, she was filled with wisdom beyond her years. When she was not busy writing, she spent her time bouncing off the walls and driving the other ferrets crazy by leaping over them so that they couldn't catch her.
